The Kilted Bee

Preparing our Apiary

Sunday 7th May 2017

We have spent this weekend clearing and preparing a site for our Apiary.

We have gone for a piece of disused rough ground that is hidden away at the back of our garage. It is on a raised bank and so the bees will already be above head height when they start to fly, so hopefully they should not be a nuisance to us or our neighbours.

Newly cleared apiary The site is in full sun until about 2pm in the summer, after which the neighbouring trees will start to shade it. These trees also provide welcome shelter from the strongest prevailing winds. There is a stream to provide water right next door but low enough down so there is little risk of flooding.

The site was covered in weeds and the ground contained lots of rubble, but after a few hours of digging we have a nice flat site with space for about 3 hives and a few nucs. I doubt we could handle any more than that to begin with, so that should be plenty.
