The Kilted Bee

Cold

Wednesday 10th February 2021

We we moved to the Scottish Highlands, we expected the winters to be rather harsher than we experienced in the Scottish Borders. Our expectations have been fully rewarded with the snowiest winter in years. Snow has been lying since Christmas with more to come and temperatures have been down to -20℃. The long range forecast suggests there is more to come and the snow will not be gone before mid March. Fortunately it has been relatively dry.

The hives remain eerily quiet, although they still have fondant on top and seem weighty enough. Not much more to do at this point other than hope the bees know what to do and can cope. I have seen it written that bees can tolerate -80℃ for 12 hours, so hopefully they are still finding it balmy rather than barmy.
